FALL 2009

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Summer is almost over. Our staff and 5 residents and 3 babies enjoyed our local farmer’s market produce using WIC as well as picking from our backyard garden. Thanks to Lauren, a well-researched menu ensures that each family style dinner, prepared by residents, provides all the vitamins and minerals needed by pregnant and nursing women.

Our new friend and volunteer, chef Carla from York hosted a fresh fruit smoothie with buffalo burger luncheon for residents, babies, and staff. Residents prepared side dishes and dessert to share. It was a lovely, delicious afternoon. Thank you to Carla.

Speaking of volunteers, a former volunteer has moved into our part-time Volunteer Coordinator, Judy Meredith.  You may meet her if you plan to attend the Volunteer Appreciation Night at New Generation on September 17th at 6:30 PM. We will celebrate our volunteers while sampling desserts and coffee.

Board Member Beverly Barney is hosting the 6th annual golf tournament at the Breakfast Hill Golf Course on October 6th. This event will provide educational resources to residents.  A new mother who resides in the transitional apartment will speak at the event. Prior to the recent birth of her son, she worked full-time at a local restaurant. While her ultimate goal is to be an x-ray technician, the first step of becoming a medical assistant seems within reach with New Generation’s support. We thank Beverly and her friends who golf for making this ‘first step’ a reality.

When I think of dreams becoming reality, I reflect on Ruthie Ford’s dream for a "New Generation" in 1987. She gathered a group of supporters and they took the ‘first step’ on the path together. At New Generation in 2009, we join with friends, board members, volunteers and staff to support each resident as they set goals and take their own ‘first steps’.

In closing, I want to celebrate Janet Hamilton and her paid staff and volunteers at Second Generation, for taking the ‘steps’ to creatively ensure that our three thrift shoppes are successful. Daily donations are sorted, priced and sold. Those funds come directly to support the important program at New Generation. Did I mention how important volunteers are to us?

It is your contribution of time, skills offered, and resources given that we change fear into excitement and dreams into ‘first steps’ of action towards success.  We appreciate all that you do and depend upon you.

Enjoy the end of summer and the cool nights as autumn’s colors embrace us,

           Kelsi
