Spring 2010

 Dear Friends,

Spring is here! A group of local Greenland 7th graders came with their teacher and planted flowers on our property last week. Thank you all and the flowers are thriving; nice job!

The Second Generation Thrift Shoppes are thriving under the excellent leadership of Janet Hamilton, Retail Division Manager. She and staff welcome and sort donations, greet customers with a smile, and provide a fun shopping experience at all locations. Judy Meredith, Volunteer Coordinator ensures that Janet has enough well trained volunteers to support the staff.

The shelter is busy. We have seven residents and five infants; with two residents arriving in June and their babies to greet us in July! The residents are all busy looking for work. One of our residents is in college, securing the education needed to provide a living wage opportunity for her and her son. Another is studying to finish her GED courses. All are excelling under the guidance of our wonderful staff; learning how to prepare low cost, delicious meals, applying for housing and gaining skills as new mothers through our on-site prenatal and parenting education as well as from visits to Families First. Yoga begins May 12th with Cynde Denson. The Thursday night ‘storytelling’ series is a hit! Please call and come to dine and share your story with the residents and staff, it is a win-win for all!

Our annual auction was held on April 10, 2010 at the Ashworth by the Sea in Hampton. It was a fun-filled evening with great silent and ‘noisy’ items. Many familiar faces were in the crowd as well as new friends to support our mission. Ruthie Ford, Founder of New Generation, Lisa Vincent, Director of Fund Development and many volunteers worked diligently before our guests arrived, decorating the tables, setting up items and meeting with the Ashworth staff to create a wonderful experience for all attendees. Hope to see you next year!

Happy Spring!  As we watch the greenery and flowers emerge from the dark soil, know that the staff of New Generation is supporting life with our programs for pregnant women and babies so that they may bloom into the healthy families they want to be. Think of us as “family gardeners”, equipped with knowledge and dedicated to healthy outcomes.

Enjoy the season of colorful flowers and warmer days,

 Kelsi
