Our amazing volunteers are at the heart of everything we do here at New Generation. From bringing joy and smiles to our mothers and children, helping with the upkeep of our shelter, or playing a special part in a family’s milestone move into permanent housing, they are an invaluable and vital part of our work, mission and community.
But as the demand for our services increase, we need more volunteers! We offer flexible opportunities to meet your schedule, whether you are retired, looking to spare a few hours after work or help out on an as-needed basis.
Ask any one of our wonderful volunteers; they’ll tell you they get so much out of helping their communities: a feeling of connectedness, a sense of giving back, and a comforting feeling of well-being. Join us and see!
Volunteer Opportunities at New Generation
Please note that anyone seeking to volunteer directly with children must undergo a background check.
Childcare
We are seeking volunteers to provide childcare for our families based on their daily needs (i.e., medical appointments, school meetings, job interviews, etc.). Most childcare opportunities range from, 2-4 hours. All volunteers interested in this category will have to complete a background check.
Educational Sessions and Tutoring for Families
Volunteers facilitate sessions in which they will teach specific topics based on the interests and the need of our families, such as financial counseling, career development, and physical wellness. They can also provide individual tutoring for families. All volunteers interested in this category will need to complete a background check.
Beautification and Maintenance of Program Spaces
Our shelter and transitional apartments house nearly two dozen families (mothers and children), and requires ongoing maintenance needs to best serve our residents. Volunteers help paint rooms, organize pantry and storage areas, winterize the house for the colder months, make general house repairs and assist with gardening, yard work and landscaping.
Support our “A New Beginning” Initiative
A New Beginning is a very special opportunity to experience the impact of New Generation firsthand. Volunteers are matched with a family preparing to move out of our shelter into permanent housing, providing the family with support and specific items during the move-out day. They will also set up and welcome the family to their new home.

Second Generation Thrift Shop
Located in the heart of Greenland, our Second Generation Thrift Shop provides a wide range of ‘gently used’ clothing, home goods and accessories, with proceeds supporting our mission.
To help keep the store operating, we rely on volunteers to sort and organize donations, as well as pricing and merchandising.
